About the Webinar:

Thom Allison, CFP® will define the term “curse of knowledge” and describe the negative influence this form of cognitive bias can have on planner/client relationships. With this foundation, he will then focus on identifying techniques and strategies for overcoming the pitfalls of the “curse of knowledge.” In addition, exercises and group discussion will deepen understanding of effective communication strategies that strengthen, rather than undermine, the development of successful client relationships.

Learning Objectives:

  • Attendees will come to understand how the origins and pitfalls of the “curse of knowledge”
  • Attendees will gain an awareness of their own “curse of knowledge” as financial professionals
  • Attendees will learn a set of strategies to overcome the “curse of knowledge” by 1) communicating with their clients more effectively, and 2) motivating their clients to take action.

About Thom Allison, CFP®

Thom Allison, CFP® – Helping financial planners create an extraordinary experience for their clients has been Thom’s focus since retiring from being a full-time financial planner. He founded Allison Spielman Advisors (ASA) in 1997 and sold it to The Mather Group in 2021. Prior to ASA, Thom was a founding partner at Financial Security Group. Thom became a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional in 1988. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Marketing from Loyola University in Chicago and his MBA degree with an emphasis in Finance from the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater. Currently, Thom lives in Cannon Beach, Oregon where he works when the tide is in and plays with his dog, Cayman, when the tide is out.
